Leadership

First Presbyterian Church, as part of the EPC, believes the perfecting of the order of the Church is best established where the scriptural doctrine of government by presbyters gathered in church courts is practiced. The Lord of the Church, Jesus Christ, has given two offices to the Church. These are Elders (consisting of Teaching & Ruling elders), and Deacons. These offices are not indications of special pre-eminence by those who hold them, but rather indicate a call to be a servant leader.

Congregational leadership is an important area of service in the church. Servant leaders of God must be called by Him, specifically gifted for a particular office, demonstrate exemplary qualities in following Christ, and be fully committed to the Body of Christ at FPC in order to serve as elders and deacons. These are distinctive leadership roles, calling for particular gifts and commitment.

Elders

The particular churches of the EPC are governed by the Session, composed of the Elders of the Church: Ruling Elders elected by the members, and Teaching Elders (or pastors) called by the congregation. Together, these Elders, as shepherds, watch over the spiritual welfare of the congregation. It is the first duty of the Elder to seek and represent the mind of Christ, but also to be sound in the faith, wise in the things of God, and discreet in all things. Both individually and collectively (as the Session), elders provide leadership in worship, teaching, mission, evangelism, care and nurture.

Deacons

The particular churches of the EPC may also have a Deacons Board that, under authority of the Session, carries out special duties assigned to it by the Session. According to Scripture, those who bear the office of Deacon should especially exhibit the spiritual qualities of the Christian, and should be steady and reliable. The first duty of the Deacon is sympathy and service, and together the Board of Deacons carries out the ministry of compassion and mercy to those in need.
